Baylor’s students now “high quality”

October 17, 2008

Or will be “perceived” as such, after the college gives its freshmen $300 to the campus bookstore to retake the SAT and another $1000 a year in “merit” scholarships if they raise their scores by 50 points. Why waste their students’ time and money on a test they took to get into college once they’ve already been accepted? A test that doesn’t predict college performance, the actual arbiter of student merit, anyway? To improve their US News rankings, and thus, their “perception” as a legitimate institution of higher education. Baylor University: doing its part to fuel America’s obsession with meaningless numbers it doesn’t understand. The faculty, shockingly, are pissed. And embarrassed. Like I am.
